A 4.2-magnitude earthquake jolted Ilocos Norte on Friday afternoon, Jan. 26, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the earthquake, which struck at 3:05 p.m., had its epicenter 17 kilometers (km) southwest of Adams, Ilocos Norte, and occurred at a shallow depth of 8 km beneath the epicenter.

The tremor was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Burgos, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Laoag City, and Paoay in Ilocos Norte and Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Sinait and Cabugao in Ilocos Sur.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs’ instruments recorded the quake at Intensity VI in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Intensity IV in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Intensity II in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; and Intensity I in Gonzaga, Cagayan and Aringay, La Union.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, it does not expect aftershocks to occur.
