The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday, Jan. 25, reported a 16 percent "decrease" in dengue cases from Jan. 1 to 13, with only 5,572 cases recorded compared to 7,274 cases from Dec. 17.

However, 14 deaths were reported during this period, resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.25 percent.
Meanwhile, it said that Caraga witnessed a 13 percent increase in cases over the recent three to four weeks, reporting 423 cases compared to 375 cases reported just two weeks earlier.
Similarly, Region XII experienced a two percent uptick in cases on Jan. 13, reporting 428 cases in the recent four weeks compared to two weeks prior.
As a response, the DOH emphasized the 5S strategy against dengue: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, use Self-protection measures, Seek early consultation, Say yes to fogging where needed, and Start and sustain hydration.
Moreover, despite the usual rise in dengue cases during the rainy season, the DOH highlighted the impact of El Niño, prompting families and establishments to store water.
DOH advised the public to keep water containers covered and regularly cleaned to prevent mosquito breeding.
