Banac expresses gratitude to PBBM for honoring SAF 44

Police Maj. Gen. Bernard Banac, director of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) has expressed gratitude to President Marcos for honoring the police’s elite force with his presence during a tribute to 44 of its commandos who died in Maguindanao in anti-terrorism operation in 2015.

Banac said the President’s presence only highlighted the bravery and heroism of the SAF 44 who lost their lives in giving justice to the victims of terror attacks and in saving civilians who would have been harmed by continuous terror activities of Marwan.

Marwan was described as an international terrorist who trained local terror groups in bomb-making and urban terrorism. 

He died in the operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao but the 44 of the SAF commandos lost their lives on their way out after armed gunmen started engaging them.

“The Special Action Force expresses its gratitude to President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos, Jr., for joining us and the entire Filipino people on the National Day of Remembrance of SAF 44,” said Banac.

He said legacy of the heroism of SAF 44 is not just a memory but an inspiration for future generations of police officers to continue to serve with valor and integrity.

“The Filipino people can expect that under the leadership of PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr., the police force and the SAF will continue to do their mandate to the people for peace and order of the country,” said Banac.

Marcos was joined by Acorda and Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos during the activity.

Abalos said the national government is now ensuring that there will be no repeat of such incident through the improvement of the capabilities of the PNP.

“As we remember today the tragedy that befell the brave SAF44, we also learn and reflect on the missteps of this unfortunate incident. We owe it to these heroes and their families to prevent another Mamasapano tragedy from happening again,” said Abalos.

“As such, trust that we would continuously push for initiatives to modernize and improve the capabilities of our police force to make them more efficient and responsive,” he added.

Acorda, on the other hand, said the legacy left by the SAF 44 continuously renews the commitment to strengthening law enforcement agencies, enhancing operational capabilities and ensuring that policemen receive the best support system, especially during crucial missions.

"May there memory serve as an inspiration for us to continue advocating for justice and peace in our  nation. We must recognize the importance of unity, coordination and effective communication in our pursuit of national security. The sacrifices made by our heroes must motivate us to constantly strive for excellence in our duty to protect and serve," said Acorda.
