Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene Garcia-Albano said that the Filipino woman, who was arrested last week over the killing of a Japanese couple in Tokyo, is in “good condition.”

This information has been relayed to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) so it can coordinate with the family of the suspected Filipina. Albano was referring to Hazel Ann Morales, 30, who was nabbed in a separate occasion.

In a TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview, she said a consul general was allowed to personally talk to the Filipina, who has now a court-appointed lawyer, at a detention center last Tuesday.

“Ang request lang po kasi ng pulis na nagbigay ng pahintulot na pwede tayong mag-meet is hindi raw po pwedeng pag-usapan ang kaso, so kinumusta na lang po namin ‘yung ating kababayan (The police who allowed us access asked not to talk about the case, so we just asked about how he’s doing),” the ambassador said.

“At nasabi naman po niya na okay daw po siya, in good condition naman (And he said that he’s okay, he’s in good condition),” she added.

In a press briefing, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega clarified that Morales and Bryan Jefferson Lising Dela Cruz are not connected with each other, and that Morales was facing charges for abandonment and not murder.

It is also possible that Dela Cruz was responsible for the deaths and not Morales, the official stated.

Both were seen in closed-circuit camera footages in the vicinity of the area of Adachi ward, with Morales being arrested on Jan. 16 before Dela Cruz this week.

The Japanese couple—Norihiro Takahashi and his wife Kimie—was found dead inside their residence in Tokyo’s Adachi Ward last week. They were found on the bathroom floor in their home, and is believed to have died due to multiple stab wounds.

Morales, who denied the allegations, is said to be in a romantic relationship with the couple’s son.

Albano cannot say yet if they would need to assist Morales’ family to visit her.

“Actually, inaalam pa po namin sa pamilya kung anong kailangan nilang tulong. We are just awaiting ‘yung word nila kung ano sa tingin nila ang maganda maitutulong sa kanila (we are still asking the family what kind of help they need. We are just awaiting word from them what help they need),” she said.
