'Maestro' Fil-Am cinematographer Matthew Libatique gets Oscar nod

Filipino-American cinematographer Matthew Libatique has been nominated for the third time at the prestigious Oscar Awards.

Matthew has been cited for his work for "Maestro," starring Bradley Cooper, which received seven nods from the Academy last Tuesday. The critically acclaimed drama tells the story of American composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Miontealegre.

Other nominees for Best Cinematography are: “El Conde,” “Killers of the Flower Moon," “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things."

Prior, Matthew was nominated for "The Black Swan" (2010) and "A Star Is Born" (2018).

Matthew, 55, was born to Filipino immigrant parents: his father was from Dagupan, and his mom was from Lucena. He studied sociology and communications at California State University, Fullerton, and then earned his master of fine arts in cinematography at AFI Conservatory.

His first stint with cinematography was for the psychological thriller Pi (not to be confused with Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" in 1998. He was also recognized for his work in the movies "Requiem for a Dream" (2000) and "The Fountain" (2006).

The 96th Oscar Awards will be held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California on March 10 (March 11, Manila time).
