The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday, Jan. 24, that the northeast monsoon, or "amihan," a weather system that brings cold winds from the north, will be at its peak in February.
According to Rusy Abastillas, Senior Weather Specialist for the PAGASA Climatology and Agrometeorology Division, the amihan season may last until February, when the weather system reaches its peak.
Abastillas said the northeast monsoon may weaken in March, which will lead to a climate transition period in March-April-May.
She added that the southwest monsoon, locally known as "habagat," may be the dominant weather system in May or June.
PAGASA defines habagat as the "warm moist winds from the southwest causing rains over the western portion of the country from May to September."
Moreover, Abastillas said localized thunderstorms will be frequent in March-April-May, as the weather system is expected to prevail during hot and humid weather conditions.
