Traffic enforcer in Manila lauded for returning student's wallet

Netizens lauded traffic enforcer Ric Paul David of Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB)-Sector 3 after returning a student's wallet.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Jan. 23, MTPB posted the wallet containing cash and driver's license found on Quezon Boulevard.
According to David, he saw the wallet on the southbound lane of Quezon Boulevard.
He said the wallet was immediately picked up by a bus conductor, but he became suspicious when the conductor suddenly gave it to a jeepney driver, so he approached him and asked if he was the owner of the wallet.
He said the jeepney driver was hesitant to surrender the wallet at first.
"Tinanong ko po kung sa kanya ung walet at sinabi ko sa kanya na my I.D. po dyan sa loob ng wallet kung sa kanya po talaga. Nang buksan ko po 'yung wallet, nalaman ko na hindi po sa kanya, sabay alis po ng jeepney driver (I asked if the wallet was his and I told him that we can check the I.D. inside the wallet if it really belongs to him. When I opened the wallet, I found out that it was not his, and the jeepney driver left)," he said.
MTPB said David immediately surrendered the lost item to Sector 3 Commander Artbel Diacosta to help him contact the owner of the wallet, Nigel Caliboso.
Caliboso told Manila Bulletin on Tuesday that he was on his way to school when the wallet slipped from his pocket.
He said he did not notice that his wallet was missing until he received a message from MTPB ordering him to report to the office to claim his belongings.
"Papasok po ako sa school that time and actually hindi ko po alam na nawawala na 'yung wallet ko. Nag-chat po sa akin si sir Ric Paul David sa Messenger (I was going to school at that time and I didn't know that my wallet was missing. Sir Ric Paul David chatted with me on Messenger)," the student said.
The wallet contained the student's LTO license and his cash allowance worth P5,500.
Caliboso said he wanted to reward David for his honesty but the traffic enforcer refused.
"Nag-aabot po ako ng pera sa kanila but hindi po nila tinatanggap so nagpaabot nalang po ako ng pasasalamat sa MTPB page and nag-email po ako doon (I send money to them but they don't accept it so I just sent my thanks to the MTPB page and I sent an email there)," he added.
David earned praise from several netizens for his exemplary service.
MTPB said this is not the first time that David has reported missing items to their office.
In 2022, David also successfully returned a cellphone to an intern student at Chinese General Hospital.
"Dahil po iyon po ang tamang gawin, Hindi po ako ang may-ari ng mga napupulot ko nararapat lang po na maibalik sa talagang may-ari lalo na at alam ko po ang hirap ng buhay at alam ko na kailangan po nila 'yun (Because that's the right thing to do, I'm not the owner of the item, it just deserves to be returned to the real owner especially I know how hard life is and I know that they need it)," David said.
