All is well that ends well.

House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Albay 2nd district Rep. Joey Salceda praised popular coffee chain Starbucks on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 23 for announcing a 40 percent discount on its products for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

"I commend Starbucks for their compensatory effort to correct the mistake of unduly limiting the discounts to vulnerable sectors of society," Salceda said in a statement.

"This is above and beyond what we requested, covering even our honored veterans," said the ranking congressman.

Earlier Tuesday, Starbucks announced that it would double from 20 percent to 40 percent the discount provided for by law to senior citizens and PWDs. This one-day benefit will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Starbucks said this "special treat" can also be availed by national athletes, eligible solo parents, and Medal of Valor recipients.

Last week, in a joint hearing in the House of Representatives, Salceda took Starbucks to task for limiting the seniors and PWDs' 20 percent discount to just one beverage and one food item.

He then hinted at consequences in case the establishment fails to implement "remedial measures", even after it had already rescinded the discount cap.

But Salceda appears to be very satisfied with Starbucks' one-day promo.

"I also congratulate my counterparts in the Senior Citizens and PWD committees of the House for helping us push for this move. This affirms the way the House Committee on Ways and Means does its job - focused on remedies, not on the blame game," he said.

"Moving forward, we will continue to seek compliance from other companies as well as improvements in the overall system of granting and accounting for discounts," the Bicolano further said.
