The 26-year-old Army private from Legazpi City bested hometown bet Shriraj Bhosale in the fifth round before settling for a draw with higher-rated FIDE Master Arjun Adireddy to hike her total to 3.5 points after six rounds in this 10-round tournament.

It was enough to put her in a crowded 42-player group at 47th place, 2 points behind co-leaders Grandmasters Guha Mitrabha and Abhijeet Gupta of India.

Frayna was tackling Sri Lankan International Master LMST De Silva in the seventh round at presstime, eyeing a victory that would propel her closer to barging into the Top 30.

Apart from aspiring for an International Master norm, Frayna is using this meet as part of her preparations for the FIDE World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary in September.

Meanwhile, joining Frayna in the pack are three other Filipino bets GM Jayson Gonzales, WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda and Jethro Aquino.

Gonzales halved the point with Rajesh Nayak, Fronda blasted S Pillai Sanjay of India, and Aquino held Indian GM R.R. Laxman to a standoff.

WIM Bernadettle galas, for her part, dumped Vietnamese WIM Luong Phuong Hanh to improve to 1.5 points.

A total of 211 participants including 31 GMs are competing in the tournament.
