DOST showcases transformative power of technology in boosting small enterprises

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) highlighted the positive impact of its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) as it showcased how science, technology, and innovation (STI) can transform businesses.

In a statement on Saturday, Jan. 20, the department underscored its objective to show the "achievements and overall impact" of DOST's technical and technological support on business growth and development.

Led by Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., the DOST team visited three thriving businesses, Safetech by Modulhaus Inc., JC Laroco Ricemill, and Nutridense Food Manufacturing Corporation (NFMC), from Jan. 10 to 12.

JC Laroco Ricemill, a SETUP graduate since 2016, currently on a second phase in 2021, said their focus is on "upgrading equipment and incorporating" DOST's Iron Fortified Rice (IFR) technology.

Meanwhile, NFMC, located in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan, excels in technology adoption.

Collaborating with the DOST-Food Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), it contributes significantly to producing essential complementary and emergency food products.

Meanwhile, Safetech by Modulhaus Inc. in Agoo, La Union, exemplified both adaptability and social responsibility.

By transitioning to produce eco-friendly three-ply surgical face masks, it not only embraced new opportunities but also contributed to public health and environmental well-being.

The department highlighted that the project visit demonstrates DOST's dedication to promoting innovation, aiding micro, small, and medium enterprises, and advancing economic development through science, technology, and innovation.

"The accomplishments of these SETUP projects are proof of the agency's transformative vision and strategic interventions that have resulted in a positive impact on businesses and communities," DOST said.
