Magnitude 4.9 quake hits Batangas---Phivolcs


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Saturday, Jan. 20, said a 4.9-magnitude tremor jolted Batangas at 4:04 p.m.

Phivolcs located the epicenter 11 kilometers (km) northwest of Tingloy, Batangas.

The tremor with a shallow depth of two kilometers was tectonic or caused by the movement of an active fault near the area, said Phivolcs.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was moderately strong at Intensity IV in Balayan, Bauan, City of Calaca, Calatagan, Lemery, Mabini, San Luis, San Pascual, Taal, and Tingloy, Batangas.

Intensity III was recorded in City of Makati; Agoncillo, Alitagtag, Batangas City, Cuenca, Laurel, Lian, San Jose, and Tuy, Batangas; Alfonso, Mendez-Nuñez, and City of Tagaytay, Cavite; and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.

The tremor was slightly felt at Intensity II in Quezon City; City of Lipa, Malvar, Nasugbu, City of Sto. Tomas, Talisay, and City of Tanauan, Batangas; Silang, Cavite; and City of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro.

It was also scarcely perceptible at Intensity I in City of Manila and in Abra De Ilog, Occidental Mindoro.

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded Intensity V (strong) in Lemery and San Luis, Batangas; Intensity IV in Batangas City, Cuenca, Laurel, Mataasnakahoy, and Santa Teresita, Batangas; and City of Tagaytay, Cavite; Intensity III in City of Manila; City of Muntinlupa; City of Lipa, Batangas; Los Baños, Laguna; Dolores, Quezon; City of Calapan and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Intensity II in City of Malabon; City of Marikina; Rosario, Batangas; Carmona and Magallanes, Cavite; and City of San Pablo, Laguna; and Intensity I in City of Las Piñas; City of Navotas; City of Pasig; Pandi, Bulacan; Malvar and Talisay, Batangas; Naic, Cavite; Lucban, Mauban, and Polillo, Quezon; Boac, Marinduque; and Abra De Ilog, Occidental Mindoro.

No aftershocks and damages to properties to be expected, Phivolcs said.
