'Strongest' meteor shower of the year visible in January — PAGASA

One of the "strongest" meteor showers of the year will showcase lights from up to 120 meteor showers per hour under a "clear, dark, and moonless" sky, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The Quadrantid meteor shower, an annual "major" meteor shower that has been observed beginning on Dec. 12, will continue until Jan. 12, based on PAGASA's astronomical diary for the month.

PAGASA said Quadrantid will reach its peak activity on Jan. 4. at 6 p.m.

"To enjoy its view, wait until its radiant, located in Bootes, rises above the northeastern horizon around 01:10 a.m.," PAGASA said.

"The shower will peak at around 6 p.m. on Jan. 4, and the best displays will be after the radiant rises on Jan. 5 until before sunrise," it added.

PAGASA noted that meteor showers can be seen with the naked eye which do not require any special equipment such as telescopes or binoculars.

"For the best viewing experience, it is recommended to observe meteor showers in a dark location far from city lights, with clear and moonless sky conditions," said PAGASA.
