House Minority Leader and 4Ps Party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan has confirmed that Borongan Airport will receive P200 million in capital outlay for the upgrade of its aviation infrastructure.

“The amount of P200 million has been earmarked in the 2024 General Appropriations Law to build up the infrastructure of Borongan Airport,” Libanan said in a statement on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

“Our goal is to increase the airport’s capacity to accommodate more commercial flights,” he said.

Taking effect on Monday, Jan. 1 was the 2024 national budget worth P5.768 trillion.

The airport serves the province of Eastern Samar and its coastal capital city of Borongan. The city is known as a popular surfing spot.

“The airport’s improvement will facilitate the transfer of people and goods, and help bring in more tourists,” the lawmaker said.

Libanan, who previously represented Eastern Samar’s lone congressional district for three consecutive terms, commended Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda for aggressively promoting Borongan City’s sports tourism.

“We all want Borongan to become the surfing capital of Visayas,” he noted.

In December 2022, Philippine Airlines (PAL) started twice-weekly Cebu-Borongan-Cebu flights, which enabled travelers to easily reach the coastal city.

“We look forward to other airlines operating flights in and out of Borongan,” Libanan said.

The airport is currently undergoing a 200-meter extension of its 1.3-kilometer runway.
