As a follow up to the three electric models it launched last year, Mercedes-Benz Philippines, now known as IC Star Automotive Inc., offers a carbon-free way to move about in the form of the latest EQS all-electric vehicle.

As the name implies, the EQS is the all-electric counterpart of the Mercedes-Benz S Class and serves as the brand’s flagship electric luxury sedan. The EQS is offered in a single variant, the EQS 450 4MATIC AMG and is priced at P9.990 million.

The EQS is built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, designed to maximize space and comfort thanks the batteries mounted in the floor. It is also designed to seamlessly combining design, technology, safety, and connectivity.

Coupe-like design

Though labelled as a sedan, the EQS was designed to have a distinctive flowing body to reduce air resistance and increase aerodynamic efficiency. The EQS achieves a 0.20 coefficient of drag, making it the world's most aerodynamic production vehicle. The smooth form also gives it a coupé-like roof line, which extends in an arc over the vehicle, over the frameless doors to the rear. The rear opens up via a fastback hatch, that reveals a spacious trunk that can accommodate three golf bags lengthwise.

The front façade features an iconic Black Panel radiator trim with three-dimensional Mercedes-Benz pattern. Flanking it are digital lights with Ultra Range High Beam, consisting of three light dots linked by a light band. The Digital Light adapts to the driving situation, illuminating the road depending on the lighting conditions, the traffic situation, the course of the road, and the weather. The rear lights are joined by a light band for an equally iconic look. Capping it off are 21-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheel that creates sporty and robust character.

The latest technology

The MBUX Hyperscreen is the highlight in the interior with a 56-inch curved display. The display is made up of three screens — an OLED 12.3-inch screen for the driver, the center a 17.7-inch display, and the front passenger 12.3-inch display — merged together by a length of bonded glass.

The intelligent display system adapts to its user by suggesting numerous infotainment displays, and vehicle functions. Adaptive software makes sure that the most pertinent applications are available at the top layer of the system and can make personalized suggestions about comfort, entertainment, or vehicle functions based on context and situation.

Passengers behind also get their own screens. They are two 11.6-inch displays with touch controls on the backrests of the driver and front passenger seats. The MBUX rear tablet is also available as standard. It is a fully fledged tablet and can also be used outside the vehicle. In addition, apps (Android) can be installed. With this convenient remote control, all rear seat entertainment functions can be comfortably controlled from any seat position.

The screens are paired with a Burmester 3D surround sound system with 15 speakers.

Naturally, the vehicle is also compatible with the latest Android and Apple smart phones, boasting of wireless charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

As expected of an S Class, it also offers the pinnacle of comfort. The new EQS rides on a four-link front and multi-link rear suspension setup similar to the luxurious flagship sedan S-Class. It features AIRMATIC air suspension with adjustable damping and real-time adaptation to road conditions.

The rear passenger space can transform into a connected feel-good lounge. It has electrically adjustable backrests, climatized front and rear seats and a comfort armrest in rear. The intelligent control option via the MBUX rear tablet in the comfort armrest is also an exciting feature.

The interior features Active Ambient Lighting consisting of 190 LEDs that can turn into one of 64 colors. These lights can also adjust to serve as visual cues to the driver such as alert him of a vehicle in the adjacent lane.

Above is a Panoramic Sliding Roof, so whether open or closed, the panoramic sliding sunroof gives a feeling of freedom and a bright and pleasant ambience in the interior.

Electrifying performance

Powering the EQS is a next generation lithium-ion battery that serves as a 108.4 kWh battery pack with a maximum range of 717 km (WLTP). Depending on the road conditions, driving habits and load, the new EQS could travel back and forth from Manila to Baguio worry-free.

It is also an all-wheel drive thanks to the 4MATIC governed by an intelligent optimization process that determines the most efficient all-wheel-drive distribution in each case. The electric powertrain on board generates 360 horsepower and accelerates the vehicle from 0 to 60 in just 5.3 seconds.

It also comes with the Mercedes-Benz Driving Assistance Package Plus that provides certain semi-automated driving features.

The new Mercedes-Benz EQS is designed to exceed all expectations, marking a major milestone in integrating progressive mobility with executive-class luxury.
