DepEd to present Basic Education Report 2024 on Jan. 25

The Department of Education (DepEd) is scheduled to present the 2024 Basic Education Report (BER) before the month ends.

DepEd, on its official Facebook page, announced that Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte will deliver this year’s BER on Jan. 25.

In its second year, the 2024 BER is expected to highlight the accomplishments of the MATATAG Agenda since it was launched in January 2022.

2023 BER

On Jan. 30, 2022, DepEd, led by Duterte, delivered the very first BER to give the public and education stakeholders an idea of the current state of Philippine basic education and the direction of the current administration towards resolving these issues.

Through the first BER, DepEd identified the challenges being faced by Filipino students, teachers, and other stakeholders such as school facilities, curriculum, literacy, and learning poverty --- among others.

MATATAG Agenda

The BER 2023 also paved the way for the launch of the MATATAG Agenda which was designed to chart a new course for the DepEd and its stakeholders in addressing challenges in basic education.

Since its introduction, "MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa" has become the rallying cry for the basic education sector.

In August 2023, when DepEd formally unveiled the revised K to 10 curriculum, it adopted the term and officially named the new curriculum the “MATATAG Curriculum.”

MATATAG represents the four critical components of education reform: MAking the curriculum relevant to produce competent and job-ready, active, and responsible citizens; TAking steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education facilities and services; TAking good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment; and Giving support to teachers to enhance their teaching.

Additionally, "matatag" is a Filipino word that, when translated into English, can mean steady, firm, strong, steadfast, and constant.

Updates on the MATATAG Agenda are expected to be at the center of the 2024 BER as well as other efforts of DepEd under the current administration.

The 2024 BER will be livestreamed on DepEd Philippines’ official Facebook page, YouTube channel, and website.
