Caritas Philippines Vice President Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, in a statement, said the organization will participate in a "Jericho Walk" in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, on Saturday, Jan. 20, to show solidarity with the communities affected by mining operations.

"The devastating impacts on the environment and the people's lives are a stark reminder of the urgency to act. We condemn the practices that prioritize profit over the well-being of individuals and ecosystems," he said.

The group even urged the government to listen to the "cries for climate justice" and act upon responsible resource management and protecting "vulnerable communities."

Calls for Accountability, Reparations

Caritas also called for accountability and reparations as their demands resonate with the ongoing struggle in Manicani and Homonhon islands, where communities bear the damage caused by mining operations.

"We stand by the communities seeking redress for the loss and damage caused by mining operations, and the ecological destruction and the disruption of livelihoods demand accountability and reparations," said Caritas Philippines Executive Director Fr. Antonio Labiao, Jr.

The group added that it is also urging the international community to "lend its voice" to support the Filipino people's struggle for environmental protection.

"The fragile ecosystems of our islands cannot withstand the onslaught of unsustainable mining practices," Labiao said.

He implored the world to stand with them in demanding an end to mining in their archipelago. Further, he emphasized that "Jericho Walk" was more than just a protest as it was the power of "collective action and solidarity."

"We will walk alongside the communities affected by mining, advocating for their rights and seeking solutions that prioritize the common good," he added.
