Operatives of Quezon City Police District (QCPD) announced on Friday, Jan. 19, the recovery of a vehicle that was stolen through the “rent-tangay” scheme in May 2023.
Based on the police report, members of District Anti-Carnapping Unit (DACU) conducted an anti-carnapping operation at around 9 p.m. on Jan. 5., in Sta. Monica, Novaliches, Quezon City.
During the operation, police spotted and flagged down a Toyota Hi Ace GL Grandia without a conduction sticker, which looked like the vehicle that was reported lost last year.
Police said that the vehicle was driven by Jan Mykael, who failed to provide documents of the car. He was brought to the DACU office along with the vehicle for further investigation.
At DACU office, Jan revealed that he and a certain "Umbao" had acquired the vehicle for P1,000,000 from one "Godfrey Grant Sibayan Joson."
However, upon presenting the documents to the Land Transportation Office (LTO), discrepancies were identified, including variations in font styles in the certificate of registration that did not align with the official font used by the office and its records.
After a thorough investigation, it was discovered that the Toyota Hi Ace GL Grandia rented by a certain Jane David Dizon on June 22, 2023 in Baguio City is the same vehicle owned by a certain Annabelle Rosendo Cayat as specified in the deed of sale of motor vehicle recorded in Jay Walker Rentals, a car rental hub.
Despite changes to the vehicle's true identity, confirmations from Toyota Motor Philippines, the Plate Making Plant at LTO, and LTO-Regional Office 3 affirmed that it was indeed the reported carjacked Toyota Hi Ace GL Grandia in Baguio City.
The recovered vehicle is currently under temporary custody of DACU, police said.
"I commend the DACU personnel, led by Police Major Hector Ortencio, for their diligence in meticulously tracing the vehicle's documents, resulting in its successful recovery," QCPD chief Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said.
