Panic strikes as 5.7-tremor rocks Surigao del Sur


BUTUAN CITY – Residents of Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur province panicked when a strong earthquake struck the area on Wednesday night, January 17.

Surigao del Sur Gov. Alexander T. Pimentel and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) reported no damage and injury from the tremor.

RESIDENTS were spooked by an earthquake on Wednesday night, January 17, that rocked Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

The PDRRMC is going around the province, particularly in Hinatuan, checking for damage from the earthquake.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the magnitude-5.7 earthquake was recorded at 8:32 p.m. and its epicenter was 28 kilometers (kms) northeast of Hinatuan. The earthquake had a depth of 23 kms, Phivolcs said.

It was felt at Intensity V in Hinatuan and Bislig City, Surigao del Sur; Intensity IV in Tagbina, Surigao del Sur, and this city; Intensity III in Cagwait and Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, Pantukan, Maco, and Nabunturan, Davao de Oro, and Magsaysay and Gingoog City, both in Misamis Oriental; Intensity II in Davao City, Cagayan de Oro City, Libona, San Fernando, and Talakag, Bukidnon, and Balingasag, Misamis Oriental, and Intensity I in Catarman, Guinsiliban, Mambajao, and Sagay, Camiguin.

Phivolcs said this earthquake is an aftershock of the magnitude-7.4 offshore Surigao del Sur tremor last month and was caused by the Philippine Trench. No damage and injuries are anticipated from the Wednesday night earthquake.
