President Marcos assured Filipino seafarers that the proposed Maritime Industry Development Plan 2028 (MIDP 2028), once completed, will prioritize their well-being while enabling them to meet global standards.

Marcos said this after meeting Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) officials in Malacañan on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
In a Facebook post, the President said the MIDP 2028 is nearing completion.
"We are finalizing the MIDP 2028, making sure that it prioritizes the well-being of Filipino seafarers," he said.
"Upon its immediate completion, we will guarantee effective project implementation and international recognition for our seafarers' qualifications," he added.
The MIDP 2028 aims to build a robust and reliable Philippine Merchant Fleet, addressing the sea requirements of the country in support of the national development agenda.
Its core programs include the modernization and expansion of Philippine domestic shipping, the promotion and expansion of Philippine overseas shipping, the modernization of the Philippine shipbuilding and ship repair industry, and the promotion of highly skilled Filipinos and a competitive maritime workforce.
According to President Marcos, it was necessary first to ensure that local systems are aligned and abreast with international systems before implementing any of the proposed programs under the MIDP 2028.
"We have to fix our house first. Because we have to compete, and in order to do that, we should have an even playing field, and then we should gain an advantage," he said.
"Let's standardize and also prioritize in terms of the immediacy of some of these," he added.
