Lipa archdiocese expresses hope for Padre Pio Shrine to gain int'l status

The Archdiocese of Lipa in Batangas has expressed hopes for the Parish and National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio in Sto. Tomas, Batangas to gain international status.

In a book titled “Enlarging the Space of our Tent,” that was published and released by the Archdiocese of Lipa on Jan.13, the archdiocese expressed its dream for the shrine “to extend its influence far beyond its local and immediate surroundings,” said a CBCP post.

“This dream reflects the archdiocese’s desire to extend its influence far beyond its local and immediate surroundings and welcome people of diverse cultures and nationalities to experience the spiritual richness it offers,” part of the book read. 

“The shrine seeks to serve as a beacon of unity, drawing followers from far and wide to participate in its solemn religious ceremonies of worship and healing, and share in the collective faith journey,” the book added.

Thousands of Padre Pio devotees and pilgrims have visited the shrine since its establishment as a parish in 2003. The church was declared as an archdiocesan shrine in 2008, and recognized as a national shrine in 2015.

The pilgrimage site also houses several first-class relics of the miraculous Italian saint, who is known to have a large following in the country.

Known for his stigmata (The Five Wounds of Christ) and gift of healing, Padre Pio is one of the most revered saints of the 20th century. When his heart relic was brought to the shrine in 2018, thousands of pilgrims visited the church to pray before the sacred relic.

The Vatican has to grant its approval for a church to be declared as an international shrine or as a sacred place for divine worship for the universal Church. 

The country currently has one international shrine, the Antipolo Cathedral which is dedicated to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Our Lady of Antipolo). 

Papal Nuncio Archbishop Charles John Brown will preside over the mass and formal declaration of the church as the country’s first international shrine, the third in Southeast Asia and the 11th in the world on Jan. 26.
