La Union town hosts surfing tilt anew

SAN JUAN, La Union – This town is hosting the World Surfing League La Union International Pro for the second consecutive year.

The Surfing Capital of the North is holding the event at the Urbiztondo Beach from January 22 to 28.

La Union Gov. Raphaelle Veronica "Rafy" Ortega-David assured assistance and safety of participants and spectators during the competition.

"Once again, this event will showcase La Union as a global surfing destination. Likewise, this will also help us spur local economic growth and empower local surfers and entrepreneurs alike," she said.

More than 100 professional surfers from the Asia-Pacific region will compete. The event will also have travel and trade exhibits.

The La Union Provincial Tourism Office (LUPTO) is expecting a five percent increase in tourist arrivals in the province during the competition period. It said that 17,976 visitors witnessed the first iteration of the event last year.

The province is optimistic that the event will promote La Union as a major surfing destination and an ideal venue for international surfing competitions. It is also expected to showcase the natural beauty and cultural richness of the province to a global audience.

This year’s WSL La Union International Pro is organized by the United Philippine Surfing Association as authorized by the World Surf League in collaboration with the provincial government, this municipality, Department of Tourism-Region 1, and La Union Surf Club.
