Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Teodoro Herbosa on Wednesday, Jan. 17 expressed his opposition to the impending PhilHealth premium hike this year.

"I want continued suspension of the increase until we have the actuarial on how long we will sustain the suspension. I don't think PhilHealth will go under even if we suspend," Herbosa said during the Kapihan sa Manila Hotel on Wednesday.

The Health chief also stressed the need for a science-based approach to accurate assessment, not just raising figures without justification.
"Pag-iisipan muna ang pag-iimplement ng increase kahit na-implement na starting Jan. 1 (Consider implementing the increase even though it has already been implemented starting Jan. 1)," he said.
"PhilHealth has enough money to continue providing benefits, and delaying the premium increase will not adversely impact its financial health," he added.
Herbosa also called for a more thoughtful approach that considers the economic well-being of Filipinos.
The DOH chief said he has already communicated his concerns about the increase to President Marcos Jr. through a letter and is awaiting a response.
Meanwhile, addressing the question of the board's involvement in the premium hike decision, he clarified, "It hasn't gone through the board yet. It was announced by the executive team of PhilHealth and management, so the board will supervise it."
“It’s not just about PhilHealth; it's a comprehensive health system reform being discussed here,” he added.
He highlighted the other ongoing efforts to lower the cost of medicines and consultations, indicating a comprehensive approach to healthcare affordability.
