Cadiz City mayor condemns rape-slay


BACOLOD CITY – Cadiz City, Negros Occidental Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. condemned the recent rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Cadiz City.

“It is sad to note that such brutal crime happened beyond our control. We never condone such,” Escalante said in a statement.

Escalante commended the police for the speedy arrest of the suspect.

The mayor said that it is up to the suspect to prove his innocence in the proper forum.

“Likewise, I now entrusted everything to our police to solve the case as soon as possible for the sake of justice for the bereaved family of the ‘hapless’ victim,” Escalante said.

The victim was found naked and lifeless on January 8, a day after she was reported missing. Her neck was slashed, her left ear was cut, and her fingers on both hands were chopped.

On January 9, the 62-year-old suspect was arrested by police in Kabankalan City after he was identified based on circumstantial evidence and witnesses.

He is the father of the victim’s stepfather, according to the police.
