All eyes will be on defending champion Centro Escolar University when the Universities and Colleges Athletic League (UCAL)-PG Flex Linoleum Season 6 comes off the wraps on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Paco Arena in Manila.

The Scorpions battle the debuting Manila Central University (MCU) at 12 noon, while the Philippine Women's University (PWU) tussles with Philippine Christian University in the second game. An opening ceremony will usher in the basketball festivities at 11 a.m.
UCAL President Franklin Evidente was grateful for the support of stakeholders which led to the continuity of the collegiate league.
“We are opening Season 6 of the UCAL with nine member schools. We would not have gotten this far without the loyalty and support of our member schools, the press, our social media and livestream partners and, of course, our major sponsor, PG Flex Linoleum,” said Evidente during a press conference at the MCU Helix Vertical Auditorium on Monday, Jan. 15.
Also present were coaches and players from the Diliman College, Guang Ming College, Lyceum-Batangas, Olivarez College, University of Batangas, CEU, PCU-Dasmarinas, and additional teams MCU and PWU.
There will be a different format for the brand-new season, with the first phase being a single round-robin contest before the teams plunge into a classification round. The Top 2 schools will get twice-to-beat advantages, while the No. 3 and 4 squads earn outright quarterfinal spots.
It will be a crossover quarterfinals with the winners engaging in a knockout semifinal game. The final round is a best-of-three series, while the battle for third place will be a one-game duel.
Formerly known as UCBL, the league returned to its original name as part of its expansion, adding sports events which include men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s 3x3 basketball and esports.
UCAL came to a halt for almost two years due to Covid pandemic. CEU then emerged as the basketball champion after sweeping the tournament with a 14-0 record, including a 2-0 domination of Olivarez College in the finals.
UCAL will be live streamed on Smarts Sports and participating social media pages every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.
