PNP buys P485M worth of vehicles, guns to boost cops' operational capability

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has procured more than P485 million worth of vehicles and firearms to boost its mobility capability, especially in far-flung areas in the provinces.

PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr. said the procurement was sourced from the Capability Enhancement Program for 2023 and that was reinforced by the balances in the 2021 and 2022 funds, adding that it is part of the modernization of the police force, particularly in boosting the police visibility in urban and rural areas across the country.

“We have been conducting assessment on what areas need more police cars and we also took into consideration all areas that need police visibility. And this procurement is the result of it,” said Acorda.

“So we will distribute these vehicles equally, also taking into consideration the areas where the local government units are very supportive of the needs of the police force,” he added.

Among those procured were 3,234 units of 9mm pistol worth PP61.4 million, night vision equipment worth P121 million and all-purpose tactical vest worth P113 million.

For the vehicles, 143 units of single cab patrol jeepneys worth P175 million and a total of 16 units of heavy-duty motorcycles were also bought.

Acorda said the procurement would help sustain the recent feat obtained by the Philippines when it was named as the third safest country in Southeast Asia. 

Aside from the procurement of equipment, Acorda said they are also planning to put up more police stations to accommodate around 6,000 more policemen that were recruited last year.
