Acop confirms PI signature drive in Antipolo, says there's no bribery

Antipolo City 2nd district Rep. Romeo Acop has confirmed that a signature campaign for a People's Initiative (PI) is being carried out in his district.

More importantly, Acop said that such collection of signatures had no monetary strings attached to it.

"Meron nangyayaring signature campaign sa aking distrito (There's a signature campaign happening in my district)," the veteran solon said in an interview Monday morning, Jan. 15.

"But I can assure you na kung merong pumipirma don, walang bayad (But I can assure you that if people are signing up, they weren't getting paid for it)," noted Acop, who served as guest speaker during flag-raising ceremony.

The signature campaign is part and parcel of a PI, which now appears to be the preferred mode of the advocates for Charter change (Cha-cha) in the country.

"You can go there in my district [to check]," added the Antipolo lawmaker and chairman of the House Committee on Transportation.

To say that the PI movement has been controversial is an understatement. Over in the Senate, Senator Imee Marcos filed last week a resolution that sought to investigate the alleged bribery of Filipinos in exchange for their signatures.

Alluding to this, Acop said: "Yun ang prerogative ng senate, kung mag-imbestiga sila di ba? Bahala sila (That's the Senate's prerogative if they want to investigate right? It's up to them)."

Meanwhile, Makabayan congressmen has filed House Resolution (HR) No.1541, with also seeks to probe the signature drive in relation to the PI.

"Kung ano ang desisyon ng aming authorities, e susunod kami run (Whatever our authorities decide on it, we will follow)," Acop said of the House measure.
