Marcos attends Royal Prince's wedding in Brunei

  • Malacañang said Marcos' attendance at the Royal Wedding was upon the invitation of Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

President Marcos flew to Brunei Darussalam on Saturday evening, Jan. 13, to attend the Royal Wedding of Brunei's Royal Prince Abdul Mateen and Yang Mulia Dayang Anisha Rosnah Binti Adam.

Malacañang said Marcos will join other heads of state in the wedding and will be back on Sunday.

It said that Marcos' attendance at the Royal Wedding was upon the invitation of Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

"The President's attendance at the Royal Wedding reaffirms the strength of the bilateral ties between the Philippines and Brunei," it added.

Prince Abdul Mateen is the sixth in line of succession to the Bruneian throne, while Anisha Rosnah is a businesswoman who owns a fashion brand and a tourism company.

The Royal Prince has been in the Philippines with the Sultan. In November 2019, Mateen joined Bolkiah during his bilateral meeting with former president Rodrigo Duterte in Malacañang.

Prince Mateen was also part of Brunei's polo team competing in the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines.

Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Brunei were established on Jan. 1, 1984, when the Philippine Consulate General in Bandar Seri Begawan was elevated to an Embassy, and the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam was subsequently opened in Makati City.

Brunei is home to over 22,000 overseas Filipino workers.
