Magnitude-4.5 quake jolts Davao Occidental


BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude-4.5 earthquake rocked Davao Occidental on Friday morning, January 12.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake was tectonic in origin and was recorded at 10:05 a.m.

Its epicenter was 97 kilometers (kms) southeast of Sarangani Island in the municipality of Sarangani in Davao Occidental.

The earthquake had a shallow depth of only three kms and was caused by the Philippine Trench.

Phivolcs sees no damage or injuries from the earthquake, along with the Southern Mindanao Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Davao Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC)

Hours earlier, a magnitude-4.1 earthquake rocked Surigao del Sur province.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was registered at 1:04 a.m. and its epicenter was 80 kms northeast of Lingig town, Surigao del Sur.

The earthquake had a shallow depth of only one km and was also due to the Philippine Trench.

Phivolcs and the Surigao del Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) expect no damage and injuries from the tremor.
