LRT-2 operation hampered by power supply issue

The operation of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) was temporarily suspended after it encountered issues on its power supply on Friday morning, Jan. 12.

Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) Administrator Hernando Cabrera said the LRT-2 was unable to begin operations at 5 a.m. due to damage sustained by its power rectifier, Rectifier Sub-station (RSS) No. 5.

The power rectifier, which was damaged in a fire in 2019, had just been rehabilitated last week.

Cabrera said that a four-day testing and commissioning will be conducted on the power rectifier which will be completed on Monday next week.

“After Monday, the regular process of bringing down trains to the depot every night after operations will be simulated. This process has not been fully completed since 2020 because of the damaged RSS. The simulation process will be done gradually so as not to overwhelm the newly rehabilitated system,” Cabrera said.

The power supply at LRT-2 was restored around 6:45 a.m. and normal operations resumed by 7 a.m.
