An excellent choice.
That was how Deputy Minority Leader and Basilan Rep. Mujiv Hataman described Batangas 6th district Rep. Ralph Recto’s appointment as the new secretary of the Department of Finance (DOF).
“I wholeheartedly welcome the appointment of former Senator Ralph Recto as the secretary of the [DOF]. Sen. Recto's extensive experience, superb competence and unyielding work ethic make him an excellent choice for this critical position,” Hataman said in a statement on Friday, Jan. 12.
The lawmaker pointed out that Recto’s noteworthy track record was proof of his ability to competently run the DOF.
(Everyone knows Sen. Recto’s ability as an excellent economist who we have followed over many years, first as a legislator who authored many of our economic laws and second, as former head of the National Economic and Development Authority.)

(As the former chairperson of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, Sen. Recto's expertise and deep understanding of our country's fiscal policies and taxation issues allowed us to formulate laws for our economy.)
Recto served three terms in the Senate, where he held the titles of Senate President Pro Tempore and Senate minority leader.
He has served several key committees including the one on government corporations and public enterprises and on science and technology, among others.
“His comprehensive understanding of the intricate details of economic and financial matters is undoubtedly an asset as we navigate the complex challenges facing our nation,” Hataman noted.
With his appointment as DOF Secretary, Recto will relinquish his posts as Batangas 6th district congressman and as one of the deputy speakers of the House of Representatives.
