DENR releases 113 young turtles in Boracay

ILOILO CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-6 (Western Visayas) released 113 young Olive Ridley sea turtles at world-famous Boracay Island in Malay town, Aklan province at the start of the New Year.

“It gives us hope that these hatchlings were safely released into the wide, open sea where they can now thrive,” said Livino Duran, DENR-6 chief.

The DENR-Boracay Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and Shangri-La Boracay Resort and Spa facilitated their release.

“I laud the efforts of CENRO Boracay to continue monitoring turtle nesting sites on the island. This activity is also a learning opportunity for those who witnessed the turtle release first-hand,” added Duran.

These turtles hatched within the beachside of the posh resort and spa last November.

Prior to their release, the hatchlings were kept in a storage box or cooler to keep them safe from predators and from the stormy weather.

The DENR-6 and its private partners have partnered for initiatives in boosting environmental conservation since the massive government rehabilitation of the resort island in 2018.
