Phivolcs observes increased seismicity in Bulusan Volcano
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday, Jan. 11, said the Bulusan Volcano Network has recorded a total of 71 volcanic earthquakes since 5 a.m. from the current record of 16 on Jan. 10.

Phivolcs said the volcanic earthquakes were associated with rock fracturing events from which the strongest earthquake ranges from magnitude 0.3 to 2.2 that occurred between one to six kilometers "beneath the southern flank of the volcano edifice."
Meanwhile, Phivolcs said there was a "weak to moderate" volume of plumes coming from the summit crater and active vents while drifting west to southeast.
Phivolcs reminded the public of increased chances of the stream-driven or phreatic eruption as the volcano is still under "low-level of unrest" or Alert Level 1.
"The seismic parameters indicate shallow hydrothermal activity is underway and may lead to steam-driven or phreatic eruption," Phivolcs said.
Phivolcs advised the Local Government Units (LGUs) and the public to refrain from entering into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ).
Moreover, Phivolcs said the residents within valleys and along river or stream channels should be wary against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in times of heavy and prolonged rainfall when a phreatic eruption occurs.
