WELCOME TO THE RICE FIELDS Joji’s rise to fame began after his run of uploading videos on YouTube under the Filthy Frank persona

Who knows George Miller? Many be not a lot, but you probably know him Joji, his onstage persona.
Joji has made quite a name for himself with three successful albums and several singles that nearly all his followers know by heart. What many might not know about Joji, however, is how he got his start as a YouTube superstar.
George first found Internet fame back in 2012 after starting a viral Internet trend referred to as the Harlem Shake. He and a couple of his friends could be seen just dancing randomly to Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” track. Although the Harlem Shake was invented before the viral video, his take was unique enough to make it stand out on its own. Soon enough, plenty of people joined in on the trend making their renditions of the dance. It remains one of the most viewed videos on his DizastaMusic channel sitting at over 67 million views.
Soon after, Joji and his friends started to delve into making absurd skits for the YouTube channel. They would later move to a different channel, TVFilthyFrank, after their original channel was on the verge of deletion due to receiving copyright strikes.

‘EY BOSS! Joji’s Pink Guy character remains a popular symbol of his YouTube career, as many of his fans continue to wear the outfit to conventions and his live performances

On this new channel, George continued to upload videos under his Filthy Frank and Pink Guy personas. Filthy Frank acted as a satiric character, acting in an absurd politically incorrect manner. As his YouTube channel describes it, his actions are meant to show how Filthy Frank acts as “the embodiment of everything a person should not be.” On the other hand, his Pink Guy character mostly sputters out nonsense and has goofy mannerisms that characterize his interactions with other people. George first showed his musical prowess after putting out rap albums based on his Pink Guy character. Each album is laced with tracks, which from the titles alone would be too vulgar for print, showing just how unhinged and explicit his character can be. Nevertheless, his second album Pink Season peaked at number 70 on the Billboard charts. One of its tracks, “Meme Machine,” was also played on air for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon before being cut short once it reached the line, “Why has God abandoned us?”
Joji’s hard work on the Filthy Frank channel would eventually pay off as he garnered a following of over 7.88 million subscribers. From 2014 to 2017, he ended up putting out several YouTube videos and collaborating with other popular YouTubers from the era, including MaxMoeFoe, Anything4Views, iDubbbz, JonTron, and HowToBasic. As his popularity continued to rise, George decided to take on a side project of creating music under the name Joji. Originally, he did not intend for people to find out about his side project as he was aware most people knew his music leaned more on satirical and absurdist aspects rather than serious and relaxing. He continued to work on both his YouTube channel while continuing to make music outside of his usual persona. At the peak of his popularity in 2017, Joji decided to take a drastic shift in his career by retiring from his YouTube channel to pursue his musical career.

SATIRE AT ITS FINEST Joji’s Pink Season album peaked at number 70 on the Billboard charts. It contains several satirical tracks written to be as vulgar as possible

Signing up with the music label 88Rising, he joined several other Asian American and Asian artists like Rich Brian (formerly known as Rich Chigga), Keith Ape, the Higher Brothers, and Niki. Under 88Rising, Joji started to create more music and perform live to sizeable audiences. He has since released one EP and three studio albums, all of which have been positively received by fans and critics. These albums are drastically different from his Pink Guy releases as they delve into more serious themes and follow a more laidback tune to invoke mellow vibes.

LIVE IN MANILA Joji performed at the Araneta Coliseum in November as part of his Pandemonium world tour

Joji has also graced the Philippines several times with his powerful performances. As part of their Asia tour in 2017, Joji first visited the Philippines to perform at Newport World Resorts’ House Manila venue alongside Rich Brian and the Higher Brothers. They would later return in 2022 as part of the 88Rising Head in the Clouds festival lineup. His most recent concert was held at the Araneta Coliseum as part of his Pandemonium world tour. It was an electrifying performance as most of the arena was filled with fans as far back as his Filthy Frank days. All of them happily sang along and cheered as Joji sang the best tracks from his entire discography. It ended with a bang as he chose “Glimpse of Us” as his final track. If his recent concert here proves anything, Joji certainly has made a mark in his musical career. He is destined for greater things. But of course, as he moves further up the ladder, people will still remember him for the joy and laughter he delivered during his days as Filthy Frank and Pink Guy.
