DOST encourages entrepreneurs to maximize products of research, development
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) stated on Thursday, Jan. 11, that it has assisted many by supporting research and development to determine which products entrepreneurs should use to enhance their businesses.

In an interview aired on Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon, DOST Undersecretary Leah Buendia said the department has funded programs of research and development to help boost the production of farmers in northern Luzon, particularly in the province of Benguet.
Buendia said the department has launched "NICER: Potato Research and Development Center" at Benguet State University where clean seed potato planting materials were used.
"If before, the farmers could harvest 60%, this time it will be doubled because of the materials used," said Buendia.
On unsold farm products laid along Tublay streets
Usec. Buendia said the department has solutions for the excess farm harvests that remained unsold and which were laid down along the streets of Tublay, Benguet.
Buendia said DOST thought of food harvest processing to maximize the unsold crops and vegetables, as the department had its food innovation center in Baguio, which has been used to innovate different products out of excess harvest of farmers.
Buendia also mentioned the cold storage facility in Benguet, which was launched in 2023, and the application of an alternative packaging system or the process of peeling the vegetables and removing outer parts to pack them into "ready-to-cook" products.
DOST on landslides in northern Luzon
Buendia said DOST has a program on the anticipation of landslides called the MULAT-BLISST (Modelling and Understanding Landslide Events in Baguio-LaTrinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay), which is a multidisciplinary and multi-variable approach for landslides modeling, monitoring and early warning system.
"Science and technology is encompassing, which means that it can solve any problem," said Buendia.
Buendia also said MULAT-BLISST could help the Local Government Units (LGUs) for early warnings and in establishing safe spots for areas of evacuation and relocation.
Electromobility research and development center in Cagayan
DOST has also a program for transportation by establishing the electromobility research and development center at the Cagayan State University.
Buendia said the department funded the program with 65 million pesos for the viability study and processes of converting two-stroke tricycles used with gasoline and oil into "e-tric" in a "cost-effective" manner to reduce carbon footprints.
"Science and technology backs us up in all areas of our lives, and it helps not only in economic growth but also in improving our own personal lives," said Buendia.
Buendia encouraged researchers particularly the expert ones to think of solutions which the research and development can give funds to, "as it is a continuous learning for all."
Moreover, Buendia said DOST conducts "Call Conference 2024" in Baguio on Thursday, Jan. 11 to talk about the programs prioritized to be funded for the research and development.
