Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan said the Traslacion was a huge success as she summed up the celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene.
On Wednesday, Jan. 10, the lady mayor expressed elation over how the entire event was successfully held, considering the heightened fervor of devotees following its three-year hiatus.
Lacuna-Pangan commended the concerned government offices of national and local, the members of Manila Police District, the Quiapo Church authorities, and the devotees whom she said participated in an orderly manner.
She also lauded and thanked the volunteers who helped provide medical aid to those who had sustained injuries.
According to Mayor Honey, it is notable that this year's Traslacion was the fastest in recent history.
She said the fastest Traslacion recorded was in 2007 when the procession took only nine hours, while the slowest were in 2017 and 2018 which lasted for a total of 22 hours.
Meanwhile, Mayor Honey was dismayed by the high number of injuries recorded.
She said most of the injuries that the devotees sustained were caused by their insistence on climbing the carriage of the Black Nazarene.
"Nakakalungkot lamang po na ang karamihan sa nasugatan ay yaong mga nagpumilit pa ring umakyat ng andas sa kabila ng paulit-ulit na pagbabawal ng simbahan ( It's just sad that most of the injured devotees were those who still persisted in climbing the carriage despite repeated prohibitions by the church)," the mayor said.
The local chief executive expressed hope that in the next "Traslacion," all the devotees will heed the advice of the Quiapo Church and city government for their safety.
