SteelAsia, French firm partner for solar power project

In a bid to fulfill its sustainability commitments, the Philippines' biggest steel company SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. has partnered with France-based energy firm TotalEnergies to use renewable energy sources to power its facility in Meycauayan, Bulacan.

Through the agreement, signed on Jan. 9, TotalEnergies will help install a 1.9-megawatt solar rooftop project at the facility.

Once operational, the solar plant may displace 2.3 million kilograms of carbon dioxide annually.

SteelAsia President Andre Y. Sy said the project is a continuation of the company's efforts to decarbonize their operations by implementing more environment-friendly measures in its six existing plants and other future facilities in the country.

According to the firm, it uses green steel manufacturing technologies in its Davao and Cebu plants, with 80 percent of their energy requirements powered by geothermal energy.

It has also been using automated furnaces to reduce emissions, and save fuel costs by up to 30 percent.

Currently, SteelAsia is building the first sections mill in Lemery, Batangas which will produce H-beams for infrastructure and large angles for transmission and cell towers. The products are 100 percent imported.
