Math wizards from Ilocos Norte snare 6 medals in Olympiad


LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte – Five students of the Sarrat National High School in Sarrat, this province, bagged six medals at the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from January 5 to 8.

They captured the World Champion medal and three gold  and two silver medals.

Brian Jansen Vallejo earned the World Champion and gold medals while Allen Iver Barroga and Zyrene Angelica Dulluog won gold medals,

Natalie Margaret Balisacan and Maria Cassandra Reich Duque pocketed two silver medals.

Their coaches were Michael Malvar, Agnes Calilao, and Jenifer Balisacan.

They were guided by school principal Dr. Marietta B. Yap and math head teacher Edmund T. Respicio.

The five students competed against 243 contestants from 12 countries who qualified for the WIMO.

“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable support of our governor, Matthew Marcos Manotoc, and all other sponsors, private companies, and individuals who truly made our participation in the competition possible,” said Malvar.

“Your belief in the potential of our team has empowered us to reach new heights and has left a lasting impression on each member of our Sarrat National High School Math Team. God bless you, Sir Gov (ernor),” Malvar added.

This team captured also gold medals at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad and the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad. in 2023.
