DSWD guarantees assistance to victims, survivors of human trafficking

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has assured that victims and survivors of human trafficking will be assisted and provided with support services to ensure their immediate recovery and reintegration into society.

DSWD Secretary for Legislative Affairs and co-spokesperson Irene Dumlao said the agency continues to assist victims and survivors of human trafficking through the Recovery and Reintegration Program for Trafficked Persons (RRPTP).

“This program underscores the DSWD’s unwavering commitment to the recovery and reintegration of victims and survivors of trafficking, as well as in the protection of their rights and promotion of their well-being,” Dumlao pointed out.

She said the RRPTP offers a comprehensive package of services to its target clients, including temporary shelter, psychosocial counseling, skills training, and various types of assistance such as transportation, financial, medical, and educational.

The DSWD also refers them to concerned agencies for other interventions and support services, Dumlao added.

“The program’s success is attributed to its comprehensive package of services designed to address the diverse needs of survivors, facilitating their recovery and reintegration into society,” she said.

1,900 individuals assisted in 2023

Citing 2023 data, Dumlao said the DSWD assisted around 1,900 victims and survivors of various forms of trafficking.

Clients served by the program included victims and survivors of forced labor, sexual exploitation, prostitution, slavery, adoption, pornography, organ removal/sale, illegal recruitment, child trafficking, repatriation, involuntary servitude, drug trafficking, intercepted persons, and others.

Dumlao pointed out that the convergence of efforts by the government and other stakeholders has primarily contributed to this milestone.

“We enjoin all government partners and civil society organizations to continue our fight against all forms of trafficking in person,” Dumlao said.

The RRPTP, developed in collaboration with the Department of Justice and other government agencies, is the DSWD's program for ensuring adequate recovery and reintegration of victims and survivors of human trafficking.

The DSWD serves as co-chair of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking, also known as IACAT.
