CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur – The site development of Candon Airport in a 50-hectare land near the bypass road in Barangay Calaoan here has started after the formal groundbreaking ceremony of the project on November 10.

MAYOR Singson (FB)
Candon City Mayor Eric Singson, former House Deputy Speaker, said that the project aims to boost the local economy and is projected to be the catalyst for this city’s development that will spill over to other towns and provinces in the Ilocos region.
Experts have meticulously studied and scrutinized the project to come up with a master plan and feasibility, environmental impact assessment, and detailed engineering design.
“This is to make sure that it is viable and ensure its alignment with the city's long-term growth objectives,” Singson said.
The government, through the efforts of House Deputy Speaker Kristine Singson-Meehan, has set aside P270 million from the General Appropriations Act of 2022 for the site development and initial construction of the runway, the Department of Transportation-Project Management Office, and barbed wire perimeter fence, and the conduct of conceptual flight procedures.
The funding was based on the five-year development plan of the airport. The city government was able to secure P70 million from Department of Public Works and Highways for the construction of the airport terminal.
The funding was also intended for the project as a community airport. It will eventually be upgraded into a domestic airport and ultimately to an international airport as demand arises.
As construction takes place, the airport is poised to be a robust economic engine for this city and neighboring towns, fostering opportunities for job creation, entrepreneurship, and business growth.
Complementing the Candon City Arena, the Ilocos Sur Medical Center, and the city's ecotourism zone, the airport will serve as a gateway to boost tourism.
Significantly reducing travel time for visitors and tourists from Central Luzon and Metro Manila, it will expedite access to renowned tourist destinations in Northern Luzon.
The groundbreaking marked the inaugural stride of this transformative project gearing towards Candon City's commitment to emerging as a major economic growth hub in the region.
Along with Mayor Singson and city officials, Director Eduardo D.J. Mangalili, head of the project management office of the aviation sector of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), graced the ceremony.
