While TNT head coach Chot Reyes could see the potential of the four-point shot in helping Gilas Pilipinas, the former national team mentor said adjusting the league rules similar to the one being applied by FIBA will provide better direction for Filipino players.

Reyes explained that the four-point shot could help the Filipino players improve their outside shooting, which, in retrospect, should also boost the Nationals' ability to shoot from deep.
However, the veteran mentor who handled Gilas during the 2023 FIBA World Cup believes that making the PBA rules close to FIBA’s would contribute more to the Nationals’ cause since they will have little to no adjustments to the international rules, particularly the officiating.
“An improvement to overall outside shooting capability is going to be good for the national team,” Reyes said when asked whether the four-point shot would help Gilas.
“We’ve been talking to the Commissioner, we've been talking to Chairman Vargas about really fully accepting FIBA rules. I think iyon talaga makakatulong. That’s the one thing that can really help the national team,” stressed the veteran internationalist.
While other elements like the game clock, number of fouls and timeout cannot be changed, the way fouls are interpreted in FIBA should be implemented in the PBA, according to Chot.
He also added that there’s much difference in the way fouls are being called in a professional league and FIBA, with most national teams adjusting to the physicality that is being allowed in the international stage.
“If I am not mistaken the board is seriously considering it,” said Reyes. “I think they are going to start adapting interpretation on fouls. Laking bagay non eh kasi the way the fouls are called in the PBA is very different from the way fouls are called sa FIBA.”
“You see that not only here in the Philippines but even elsewhere, even the US, they really have to get used to the FIBA interpretation of fouls. I think that’s one such step that we can do to be a big help to the national team,” he added.
As for the four-point shot, Reyes has really no qualms about it although he said that it has to be tested out in the real game first before judging whether it would work or not.
PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, in an earlier interview, said they can just take away the new rule next season if proven not effective.
“It is really up in the air until we really see it in actual competition. Di talaga natin masasabi but at least we give it a try. I think that’s a good sign for the PBA board and governors to try and do things to add a little new flavor sa liga natin,” he added.
