The national government allotted P140 billion budget to fund the operation of state colleges and universities in the whole country, according to Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr.
Abalos issued the statement during the commencement exercises at the Eastern Samar State University on Tuesday, June 11.
The DILG chief highlighted the role each graduate plays in shaping the future of the community and the nation.
"You are the torchbearers of knowledge of our nation’s future. Kayo ang magtuturo sa susunod na henerasyon (You will be the teacher of the next generation)," Abalos said.
In his speech, Abalos also underscored the immense responsibility that comes with being an educator, referring to them as the bearers of knowledge for the future.
Reflecting on personal anecdotes, Abalos shared a story about his father, Benjamin Abalos, Sr., who overcame poverty to achieve success, illustrating the transformative power of education.
"Edukasyon lamang ang paraan para makaahon sa kahirapan (Education is the only way to escape poverty)," he stated, emphasizing that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.
Abalos also encouraged the graduates to strive for their dreams and never give up.
"Ang mundo ay bilog, matuto kang mangarap para makuha mo ang gusto mo (The world is round, learn how to dream to achieve what you want)," Abalos noted.
Abalos further underscored the importance of collective action, particularly for those entering the workforce, to help drive the country forward by embracing their roles in fostering national development and unity.
