San Jose del Monte City (SJDM) lone district Rep. Florida "Rida" Robes underscored on Saturday, Sept. 9 the importance of the city’s anticipated conversion into a “Highly Urbanized City (HUC)” later this year.
Rep. Robes did so on the occasion of the 8th annual Tanglawan Festival. "Tanglaw” means light.
“Kailangang-kailangan natin ito. Lumalaki and ating populasyon at nag-qualify tayo para maging HUC. Kapag tayo ay component city lamang, medyo maliit and ating pagkukunan ng paglilingkod at serbisyo sa ating mamayang San Joseno,” Rep. Robes said.
(We really need this. Our population has been growing and we have qualified to become an HUC. Remaining as a component city means we won't have as much resources for serving the public here in San Jose.)
“Habang lumalaki ang populasyon, lumalaki ang pangangailangan (As our population grows, so do our needs),” reckoned the veteran solon.
The congresswoman promised that once the city becomes an HUC, it will adopt three cities in the province. The grant of free education will also be expanded.
A 2020 date from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that SJDM City has a population of 651,813 in 156,871 households.
“This is the 18th most populated city in the country and the largest local government unit in Bulacan and Central Luzon,” said Mayor Arthur Robes, the congresswoman's husband.
This means SJDM easily met the required 200,000 inhabitants as well as the locally-generated P250-million annual income for two consecutive years.
The Robeses are urging residents of Bulacan to vote “yes” for the city’s bid to become an HUC during the plebiscite on Oct. 30, 2023.
The city was proclaimed as a HUC by former president Rodrigo Duterte through Proclamation No. 1057 in December 2020. It will take effect after the ratification of the plebiscite result.
