Police arrived in the area at about 3 a.m. to conduct safety procedures but since electricity was cut off, they waited until 5:30 a.m. to clear the area.
While clearing operation was ongoing, Police Senior Master Sgt. Roselier Hangka, a member of the Ordnance and Explosives Division, picked up a Subscriber Identification Module card lying on the ground which suddenly exploded. Hangka was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Police Col. Sandy Vales, Lanao del Sur police chief, said the death of Hangka was unfortunate.
"Sad to note may isang personnel ng EOD na naputukan po ng second explosion. All the procedures are being done by our EOD personnel, however may ano lang talaga medyo disgrasya talaga (An EOD personnel was killed in a secondary explosion. All the procedures are being done by our EOD personnel. It was unfortunate that one of our personnel was killed),” Vales said.
No manual load dropping or power interruption was implemented after the incident, said NGCP, while repair of the tower will commence as soon as the area is secured.
NGCP is coordinating with authorities to secure the area and identify the perpetrators of the incident.
Vales appealed to the people of Lanao del Norte not to be afraid as this was an isolated case. “We will see to it that we will maintain peace and order in the province of Lanao del Norte."
