House Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has aired her side of the story regarding her recent viral photo with former vice president Leni Robredo.
In a terse statement Saturday night, Sept. 9, Arroyo gave a rather simple explanation as to why she and former Liberal Party (LP) chairperson Robredo were seen under the same roof.
"I recently had a social dinner with former Vice President Leni Robredo and mutual friends from Bicol. We chatted about Bicol politics," Arroyo, a former Philippine president, said.
Photos of the happy occasion were posted two days ago on the Facebook account of Alita Alon Alon Mercado. Needless to say, the pictures have gathered a lot of attention online.
Robredo, a former Camarines Sur congresswoman, ran for the presidency in May 2022 but ended up second.
Arroyo backed the Presidential campaign of eventual Palace race winner, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
Last May, Arroyo denied any hand in an alleged coup plot against House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who is the cousin and most trusted ally of Marcos. It was around that time that Arroyo was "demoted" from the lone Senior Deputy Speaker to one of eight deputy speakers.
Vice President Sara Duterte was also linked by pundits this supposed House leadership squabble. Romualdez has since said he and Duterte were "good".
