SURIGAO CITY – All roads lead to the famous day-long ethnic dancing 39th Bonok-Bonok Maradjao Karadjao Festival in this city on Friday, September 9.
The police, military, and traffic enforcers are all ready to secure the event.
Officials said though Surigao City is one of the most peaceful cities in Mindanao, they will not allow any crime to mar the most awaited festive event of the year.
Tourism officials led by Department of Tourism (DOT)-13 Director Ivonnie B. Dumadag already noted the influx of tourists eager to watch the festival celebrated through a colorful street dance competition participated in by 31 barangays in the Caraga region.
“Mushrooming of spectators, side by side of the city’s main thoroughfares, are expected during the colorful street dancing and the grandstand showdown of all contingents participating in the event,” Dumadag said.
Originating from the Mamanwas, early settlers here, the festival is also a tribute to Saint Nicholas de Tolentino, this city’s patron saint, who feast day is September 10.
“And when we say street dance competition, the street dancers will not dance hip hops in their modern clothes. They will dance from slow to fast traditional music, wearing their saya and barong, headdresses, and other props,” Dumadag said.
“The performers of the Bonok-Bonok Festival are a sight to behold, and the beautiful and unique street dancers of Bonok-Bonok will leave you speechless with their incredible and magnificent talent and extraordinary performances and while also seeing their amazing beauty,” DOT-13 Tourism Operations Officer Kylee Doreene Q. Plaza also said.
"The annual festival has become the image of our rich cultural heritage. It has likewise provided entertainment to tourists and locals alike as they join the colorful performances on the city streets during the annual street parade and bear witness to the masterful staging of the dance drama during the dance showdown," Plaza said.
Some of the dancing competitions are the Mindanao-wide Tukar Bonok-Bonok, Rayna nan Bonok-Bonok, and Sadjaw Bonok-Bonok showdown (Grandstand) Bundak Music Festival (Boulevard).
Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw is also considered the most awaited event here before the celebration of its annual fiesta on Saturday, September 10.
City officials led by Mayor Pablo Yves L. Dumlao ll said the Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival is a thanksgiving and invocation to the Almighty through the intercession of the city’s patron saint, Señor San Nicolas de Tolentino, for bountiful blessings of peace and good health.
