Singapore defense attache, EU envoy explore deeper military, defense ties with PH

Singaporean Defense Attaché to the Philippines Col. Geajaindren Mariapan and Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to the Philippines Luc Véron expressed strong interest to improve their countries’ military and defense partnership with the Philippines.
Mariapan paid a courtesy call on Philippine Army (PA) Commanding General Lt. Gen. Roy M. Galido at the Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on Friday, Sept. 8, to convey his intention to deepen the two countries’ military ties.
Particularly, Mariapan and Galido discussed matters concerning the conduct of training, exercises, and support activities between the PA and Singapore Army on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) efforts and other operations.
“The Army Chief expressed his utmost gratitude for the cooperation of the Singaporean Army in strengthening the partnership between the two Army,” Col. Xerxes Trinidad, PA spokesperson, said.
Meanwhile, Véron was welcomed by Department of National Defense (DND) Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City last Wednesday, Sept. 6, during a separate courtesy visit.

“The Philippine and EU sides committed to deepening defense relations in light of recent developments in the maritime domain and the effects of climate change,” DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said on Friday.
Teodoro thanked the EU for its support to the Philippines “especially as the country moves towards a period of transition and transformation” while Ambassador Véron lauded the Philippines' efforts in upholding international law and the rules-based international order.
“Both sides underscored the threat climate change poses, especially in their respective disaster risk reduction and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR efforts. Relative to this, Secretary Teodoro remarked that HADR must be sustainable. As the EU has been involved in supporting the Philippines' disaster preparedness efforts, especially on early warning systems (EWS), Ambassador Véron likewise underscored the coordination is key,” Andolong noted.
The two officials also talked about security developments in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), the Philippines' defense priorities, maritime domain awareness (MDA), reconstruction in Marawi City after the 2017 siege, the Philippine’s amnesty program and support to rebel surrenderees.
