The Quezon City local government unit (LGU) received 24 bike racks from the Makati Business Club (MBC) and Shell Pilipinas Corporation (SPC) during a turnover ceremony at the Covered Walk, Legislative Building, Quezon City on Friday, Aug. 8.
Quezon City Assistant City Administrator Mr. Albert Kimpo, together with Shell Pilipinas Corporation Vice President for Corporate Relations Mr. Sege Bernal, Makati Business Club Mr. Coco Alcuaz, and Quezon City Green Transport Division Head Ms. Cora Medes led the event held to provide support to the biking community in the city.
The turnover of the bike racks is part of the Business for Biking Project which aims to help Filipinos who go to work using bikes and for whom "biking is work."
Through the Biking Project, the MBC engages with government, business, and advocacy groups to develop a safe and sustainable environment for cyclists via policy, infrastructure, and other activities.
The bike racks are also part of the Wheels For Work Project, a nationwide initiative launched by the Makati Business Club and Ayala Foundation on World Bicycle Day 2021.
The project's objective is to offer new bicycles to Filipino workers who require safe and eco-friendly transportation for their daily journeys to work.
Kimpo said the city government is currently pursuing expansion of its bike lane network to 350 km covering national and local road.
He also challenged the Green Transport Office and the Department of Order and Safety to expand the Biking Project to produce more bike racks in the city.
“Let's make sure we install these in areas where they would be utilized by our bikers and so that we can encourage more institutions to set this up in those areas," Kimpo said.
For her part, Medes asked for help from the private sector to provide more bike racks in the city which has around 22,000 bikers.
She also added that the local government has already deployed bike racks in several schools, markets, and other public places to promote active transport among QC residents.
The 24 bike racks from MBC and Shell Pilipinas will be placed at Quezon City University, Quezon Memorial Circle, and Amoranto Sports Complex.
