DSWD to start distribution of cash aid to small rice retailers on Sept. 9

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will distribute P15,000 cash assistance to small and micro rice retailers in four Metro Manila cities starting on Saturday, Sept. 9.
“Ang DSWD ay handang-handa na para mag-payout. Nandiyan ang pondo at naitabi na namin (The DSWD is ready to carry out the payout. We have the funds and have set them aside),” DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian said in a radio interview on Friday, Sept. 8.
The cash distribution under the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) will be initially conducted in the public markets of Quezon City, Caloocan City, Manila City, and San Juan City.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian and DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual will oversee the SLP payouts in Commonwealth Market in Quezon City and Maypajo Market in Caloocan City.
The DSWD and DTI convened on Friday to finalize the initial list of small rice retailers who may qualify for government cash assistance to cushion the impact of the imposition of price caps on regular milled rice and well-milled rice.
During the meeting, the DSWD and DTI agreed that rice retailers located in wet markets, public markets, and other public areas, excluding supermarkets and convenience stores, will be eligible for a P15,000 cash assistance.
Executive Order 39, which came into effect on Sept. 5, set a price ceiling of P41 per kilogram for regular milled rice and P45 per kilogram for well-milled rice.
