P10-M dairy box facility set for construction in Leyte

CARIGARA, Leyte â€“ The first dairy box facility will be built here to hasten milk processing and production in this province.

Mayor Eduardo Ong Jr. on Thursday, September 7, said the project is an initiative in coordination with Sen. Cynthia Villar, chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform.

The P10-million project will be implemented by the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC). It includes the marketing hub and distribution of 50 heads of carabaos and processing facility to two associations.

Ong added that they aim to promote dairy milk production complemented by coco-based farming systems to augment the farmers' income.

"For the longest time we have been outsourcing carabao's milk for our 'pastillas' and other products. At least now, we are already self-sufficient and we are also looking into exporting our products in the future," he said.

Pastillas made from carabao's milk is one of the biggest industries in this municipality.

The project also aims to help improve the nutrient deficiencies among children through feeding programs and provide agricultural interventions to coconut farmers through the cooperative conduit scheme.

The cooperative conduit shall be responsible for the development of carabao-based enterprise through consolidation, processing, and marketing of dairy-based products.
