Manila City Council lauds 2 Manilan athletes for winning in international competitions

The Manila City Council (MCC) announced on Thursday, Sept. 7, that it commended two Manilan athletes for their victories in international competitions.
On Sept. 5, the MCC passed two resolutions authored by Councilors Numero "Uno" Lim and Benny "Fog" Abante III, honoring the pole vaulter Ernest John Obenia and archer Samantha Alexis Pioquinto.
Obenia competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he ranked second in the men's pole vault based on World Athletics Organization rankings.
Obenia set a new tournament record in his recent international competition held in Aachen, Germany last Sept. 6.
His new record— 5.92 meters in the NetAachen Domspringen competition, where he won his second gold medal after his first win in the Internationales Stadionfest at Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany last Sept. 4.
Obenia was also the first Asian to join the exclusive "six-meter club" in Norway last June, where he cleared six meters en route to winning the Bergen Jump Challenge.
In July 2023, Obenia cleared a 5.82-meter record at the Bauhaus-Galan leg of the Diamond League in Stockholm, Sweden, earning him a spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Meanwhile, Pioquinto represented the country in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Archery Youth Championships held in Cebu from Aug. 16 to 19 this year.
She won the gold medal under the category of 21 women's team in ASEAN Archery and a bronze medal in the individual- overall round categories.
She also represented the National Capital Region (NCR) in this year's palarong pambansa held in Marikina from July 29 to Aug. 5.
